Why focus on Legislators & Government Policymakers?
Everything we all do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions helps. Yet the most important action we can take is to join with other citizens to change our nation’s laws, policies, regulations and use of taxpayer dollars to shift our country to high-efficiency technologies and clean, safe, renewable energy sources.

Time is Short! The current proposal backed by Obama is 17% of 2005 levels is not enough.  It is 3% to 5% of 1990 levels; we should be aiming for 40% of 1990 levels by 2020.

We have technologies to do this (see 2000 Watt Society and the Energy [R]evolution report). Policies in some state governments and in the U.S. EPA are shifting. But the change is not happening fast enough, and current bills would not stop or slow or even reverse positive movement.

We need more national laws, policies and changes in government tax incentives and funding to help our households, communities, businesses and non-profit organizations make the shift to high-efficiency technologies, energy efficient buildings, energy efficient transportation, and safe, clean, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, wave, tidal and geothermal.  The U.S. would then compete favorably with countries like China, Denmark, Germany and most of Europe who are adapting to sustainable energy faster than the u.s.  This will produce more and better jobs.

Join us!
Together, as citizens and concerned organizations, we can provide the support, information and urging our legislators need to work hard for strong, effective climate policies that have a realistic chance of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2020. Only citizen action can help legislators stand up to pressure from coal, oil, gas, biomass, nuclear, waste incineration and other economic interests that want to keep Americans dependent upon polluting energy sources that maximize their profit and market share.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."  Margaret Mead
